Spring into Action
Spring is starting to peek its way through the winter haze—and that means a reinvigorated zest to get out and be active. Here are a few quick health and fitness tips to remember:
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Let the season of rejuvenation inspire you to step outside your comfort zone and try something new, like:
- Take a dip in the pool
- Go on a bike ride with friends
- Enjoy a hike or walk
- Get into the groove with Zumba, aerobics
- Try a yoga or a Tai Chi class
- Hit the putting green
PROTECT YOUR SKIN
Exposure to the sun is great for soaking in some vitamin D. However, harmful UV rays can also increase risk for skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the average age for skin cancer diagnosis is 63. With so many seniors at risk of developing melanoma, it’s critical to apply sunscreen with an SPF 30+ and wear protective, breathable clothing.
STAY HYDRATED
Due to physiological changes associated with aging, decreased fluid intake and even a diminished sense of thirst are common among older adults. Whether at home or out and about, stay hydrated to replenish fluids lost through activity.
CLEAN OUT THE MEDICINE CLOSET
Spring cleaning your medicine closet is just as important to your health as tidying the rest of your home. Devote some time to clean out empty boxes and bottles, expired medicines, and old prescriptions no longer in use. Make sure to remove any personal information and follow directions for proper disposal.
GO TO SCHOOL
There are plenty of opportunities for further health and wellness education, including an upcoming Summit Vista Health and Wellness Fair Thursday, April 25. Learning how aging increases your risks for certain conditions can equip you with the knowledge to prevent them down the line.
