7 “Must See” Nature Trips in the Salt Lake Valley

Summit Vista is built on the core values of being healthy, active, independent, and engaged. You may already be aware of many of the beautiful and inspiring hikes and scenic areas in the valley. Here are seven you won’t want to miss:

1. ENSIGN PEAK: There’s a bit of an elevation gain (350 feet), but the hike is actually only about a mile round trip. Enjoy incredible views of downtown, the Great Salt Lake, and the surrounding mountains. Just up the hill from the Capitol.

2. RED BUTTE GARDEN: From May 1 to August 31, you can enjoy the garden splendor of Red Butte Garden from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Use the garden maps to stroll around the park and see fantastic and colorful plants, flowers, and trees.

3. THIS IS THE PLACE HERITAGE PARK: For a short stroll through the history of the Utah pioneers, visit this park and visit attractions like the Native American Village or a horse ride with Western Trail Rides.

4. MILLCREEK CANYON: One hike you’ll want to try here is Pipeline Trail. 6.5 miles of beautiful wildflowers and scenic views, this trail is popular for hiking and trail running, take it as far as you like—and it’s dog friendly. (canyon fee required)

5. ALBION BASIN: This mile-long wildflower hike is known for its dazzling display of mountain wildflowers. You’ll find it at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon (parking near the Albion Grill). You may also see moose and deer.

6. HIDDEN FALLS: Located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, this half-mile round-trip hike takes you up 50 feet in elevation to a beautiful waterfall secretly tucked away from civilization.

7. JORDAN RIVER PARKWAY: Here’s one right in the city. The most popular section is in Murray, featuring 5 miles of paved trails, picnic areas, boardwalks, playgrounds, and restrooms. We are fortunate to have so many scenic hikes near the Salt Lake Valley. May through August is the best time to get out and see them!
